Happy International Flirting Week!
In celebration of International Flirting Week (February 13-19, 2013) and Valentine’s Day, Zoosk conducted a survey among more than 13,000 of our members around the world to gather their thoughts on flirting – why they do it, how they do it, and who does it best.
Says Robin Gorman Newman, founder of International Flirting Week: “As the Zoosk survey shows, many view flirting as fun even if they don’t want to date the person, but it’s also a way to jumpstart a relationship or rekindle romance. In our busy lives, flirting can be a quick and effective way to remind your mate that you love and are excited by them.”
So what did our survey discover? Well, here’s what we found out!
It’s a battle of the sexes!
- The majority of men (60%) think that women are the biggest flirts, and the majority of women (53%) think that men are more flirtatious!
#1 reason why people flirt? It’s fun.
- 41% of men and women around the world say, “flirting is just playful fun!”
- 20% say is it a good ice breaker when dating, although only 11% say they flirt to attract a partner.
- 18% say flirting helps keep the romance alive in a relationship
Both men and women admit to flirting just for fun.
- More than half of men (54%) will flirt with a woman even if he is not interested in pursuing a relationship with her.
- 41% of women will flirt with a man even if she is not interested in pursuing a relationship with him.
Flirting keeps the romance alive.
- 89% of men and women think that it is important to flirt with your significant other even when in an established relationship.
Biggest turn-off when it comes to flirting?
- 32% say coming on too strong and invading personal space are the biggest turn offs.
- 20% say corny pick up lines are a turn off.
- 20% say inappropriate comments about one’s physical appearance.
- 7% say suggestive body language.
We all know it and they admit it: Italians are flirts!
- 97% of Italian men consider themselves a flirt, but American men are not too far behind at 76%.

The exercise of love

There’s a common notion that when people get into relationships, they proverbially let themselves go. Well, according to a recent survey Zoosk conducted in Canada, that’s simply not true. Our survey showed that 59% of coupled-up Canadians are planning to work out this year primarily because they want to impress their partner. Women especially.

Why choose Zoosk over other online dating sites?

by Jimi Alfaro
If you’re wondering what the difference is between online dating companies, here are some reasons why you might choose Zoosk. While I’m happily married, I’m happy to recommend Zoosk to singles out there who are looking to find love. For my personality type, I’ve came to some conclusions on why Zoosk is right for guys like me. Maybe the same will be true for you too.
First, what is your goal? What do you want to accomplish? Ask yourself: “Do I know what I want or am I still trying to figure that out?” If at the moment you know you want to meet some great people, to go on dates, to enjoy life, but maybe you’re not ready to get married and have kids and all that stuff, then I recommend Zoosk.
Most dating sites make you answer a pretty lengthy questioner before you’re even allowed to post a profile. And then the service starts sending you matches, rather than give you the tools to embark on your own dating quest. But Zoosk makes logging on really easy. Zoosk has you create a profile very similar to your Facebook page. You are actually able to just connect the two together. It’s a fantastic service for singles because you can immediately seeing profiles.
Many old school dating sites seem to be more of a match making service. The song from Fiddler on the Roof comes straight to mind. ”Match maker match maker make me a match. Find me a find. Catch me a catch.” Ask yourself: “Do I even want a match maker telling me who to date?” Personally I think I rather see the person before I agree to meeting them. I’d rather read up about them before I commit to anything. If that’s also your mindset, in the end I think you’ll like using Zoosk.
Personally, self discovery works better for me. I want to see and read more about a person before I wink and say hi to them. Maybe you’re like me, and which case, good luck Zoosking.

Thoughts on holiday dates

by Jimi Alfaro
I love this time of year. Dating during this time of year is also very fun and I have to say much easier to do. For me there are so many fun activities going on. So many events, lights, sounds, and the countless happy people all around. This really helps set the tone of the date.
For me I find that when going on a date you have all these standard questions that you ask. Questions like where did you grow up, what do you do for fun or do you have a favorite restaurant. You can have questions that are conversation starters like tell me about a fun vacation or business trip you’ve been on or how do like spending your time during a staycation. But when the holidays are upon us those questions can be shifted to the back burner. You can dive deep into fun questions that will perk up your date. Questions like tell me about your favorite Christmas or the best gift you received as a child or as an adult. Why not ask both!
This time of year brings fond memories to mind and sharing them with to your date gets the two of you closer and conversations flowing. I remember taking a date to see the city tree and as we enjoyed looking at all the lights and ornaments I asked my date if she had a favorite tree ornament. She told me about an ornament she got when she went to a Giants baseball game when she was back in college. She kept it over the years and had fond memories of that day. That got me thinking about the Giants and now knowing that she was a fellow fan we spoke about the team, our fanhood and a potential future date to catch a game. Planning future dates while on a date are normally a good sign. =D
My point is that sharing personal memories as simple as a favorite ornament can make your date more memorable and one of many to come. So when you’re out enjoying this time of year ask your date some softball questions about what they like about this time of year. You’ll see that sparking up great conversations will be easy. Happy Holidays!

Romance and giving around the world

Giving is a topic that comes to mind a lot this holiday season. It’s often said that you get what you give and to a large degree we believe that’s true. Recently, Zoosk ran a survey in Denmark about relationships and giving, and found some really thought-provoking things about Danish attitudes toward those topics. Here are some of the more interesting stats:
On paying the bill for a date
- 44.8 % of Danish men say it is important for them to pay the restaurant bill and keep the doors for their loved one.
- 22.7 % of Danish women believe that men always must pay and keep the doors for them.
- 64.4 % of Danish women find it less important, but appreciate this romantic gesture when it appears.
On the little things
- 39.6 % of Danish respondents perceive spontaneous hugs and kisses as the most romantic gesture they could receive
- 32.4 % prefer a candlelight dinner
- 16.5 % say they’re happy just to receive a loving text message during the work day
- Only 5.6 % would rank a spontaneous gift from their partner as the most romantic gesture.
Do you think people in your country share these attitudes? Is this pretty universal? Let us know in the comments section below! Happy Zoosking!

Love can endure Armageddon!

Despite all the doom and gloom surrounding December 21, 2012 (the last day of the Mayan calendar), a new survey reveals that Americans are more optimistic about this day than previously thought. Zoosk recently conducted a survey among more than 4,000 of its members in the U.S. to gather their thoughts on this date, if they are preparing for it, and how the idea of the end of the world would affect their plans.
In the words of Alex Mehr, our co-CEO: “With all the coverage about the end of the world according to the Mayan calendar, we thought it would be fascinating to ask people about the choices they would make in the face of Armageddon.”
Here are some of our survey findings:
Forget the hype about the end of the world – Americans are feeling optimistic about Dec. 21, 2012.
o 93% of Americans think the world will not come to an end on Dec. 21, 2012.
o Only 25% of Americans will do any kind of preparation for Dec. 21, such as buying survival gear and emergency supplies.
Love can endure Armageddon!
o 68% of Americans say they would stay in the relationship they are currently in even if they believed the world were coming to an end.
o 34% of Americans would like to spend their last day on Earth snuggling with a loved one.
The last day on Earth would not bring out the worst in us.
o Only 5% would max out their credit cards.
o Only 1% would tell-off their boss.
(We conducted the survey online in November 2012. The survey garnered 4,094 responses from members of Zoosk in the U.S.)
Our thoughts? Whew! Armageddon isn’t so bleak after all. What do you think?
